ROYAL WATCH 2009 REDEMPTION PIECE |

Ed’s One World Safari
Dimensions: 2.25 x
2.5 x 2
Item #: RW09SA
$65.00
 |
The
price of fuel has convinced Ed that a roving safari
service doesn’t make much business sense. Instead, he
has invited his animal pals to relocate to his mini zoo.
You can see that more than enough took him up on the
offer! To keep costs down, Ed actually encourages
visitors to feed them. The animals are lovin it, but
it’s not the healthiest of environments. The
less-than-perfect circumstances shouldn’t come as a
surprise, since Ed’s always been a bit ragtag and
hapless. As Peter was carving the llama on this
miniature redemption piece, he was reminded of fly
fishing (the field next to his fishing lake is full of
alpaca). He thus embarked on a fly-fishing carving
frenzy, with all of the lid secrets relating to this
hobby. Snipe and Purple is his current favorite fly. On
his recent 49th birthday, he treated himself to a new
rod, the "Gordon 2". "NZ style" is the method he
prefers. Within this box figurine are carvings of
discarded apple cores and banana skins. At least there
aren’t cheeseburger wrappers!

Bathing Beauties
Dimensions: 2.5" h x
2.25" w
Item #: RW08BB |
“Bathing Beauties” was meant to be a Steller’s sea lion
(Eumetopias Jubatus), but after it was carved, Peter
noticed that some of the pictures he had used as
reference were of the Californian sea lion (Zalophus
Californianus). So he has created a hybrid! During his
research, Peter also learned the difference between
seals and sea lions. Sea lions have ear tufts and can
bend their rear flippers forward, making them more agile
on land than seals. “Steller’s” and “Californian” are
inscribed on the lid, and the number “34” refers to the
number of teeth a sea lion has (unless they’ve eaten too
many sweets). Another sea lion appears inside this box
figurine, as does the new 2008 year of production
hallmark.

Polar Melt
Dimensions: 3" h x 3"
w
Item #: RW08PB
$85.00
 |
The 2008/09 Royal Watch Club
Redemption box figurine portrays three polar bears
sweltering under a hot sun. The ice floe they are sat on
has almost melted – global warming at work. One bear is
puzzled about the heat, another is trying to keep cool
with a fan, and the third has gone to the extremes of
unzipping his skin, revealing a pierced nipple. Along
the base is a miniature polar bear and a melting Glacier
Mint. Fox’s Glacier Mints are a confectionery that
formed part of Peter’s childhood. During the early
1980’s, a long-running Glacier Mint advertising campaign
showed a fox and bear arguing over who should sit atop
the mint. On Peter’s model, it is so hot that even the
mint is melting. The interior shows a seal popping up in
the worst possible place. Around the lid are the names
of the first three polar bears born at London Zoo:
Brumas, Pipaluk and Triplet. Brumas was named after her
keepers, Bruce and Sam. Pipaluk is Inuit for “the little
one”, and triplet was named after a crater on the moon.

ROYAL WATCH 2007 REDEMPTION PIECE |

The Green Team - $95.00

Dimensions: 4 x 4 x 3
Master Carver Peter Calvesbert chose the Green Sea
Turtle as subject for the 2007/08 redemption for a few
reasons. From a design viewpoint, the turtle is both box
shaped and graceful, a rare combination in the animal
world. “Seaside Rendezvous” has always been one of his
favorite pieces, so he was interested in exploring the
topic in larger format. Additionally, with “Wildlife
Warriors” being the 07/08 club theme, Peter wanted to
carve a threatened species. Not only are sea turtles
injured by boat propellers and fishermen’s nets, but
they are hunted by humans for their flesh, shells,
leathery skin and fat, and their nests are raided for
their eggs. They suffer habitat loss from human
development of their nesting areas and ocean pollution.
Artificial lighting on nesting beaches confuses
hatchlings, luring them toward roads instead of the sea.
This large redemption box figurine has secrets galore!
“Peregrine 4” is a reference to the falcon and her four
eggs nesting near Peter’s home. The picture of the wind
turbine recognizes the growing popularity of this
alternate energy source in the UK, but unfortunately the
turbines are taking their toll on bats. “Pip” is short
for Pipistrelle, a type of bat being injured and killed
by the turbines. This box also contains the initials LJR
and yes, Peter did carve this on the wrong box! Of
course if Joe and Lynda Ringelstein do have a pet Green
Turtle, then he will be vindicated. The interior shows
baby turtles emerging from the sand before having to
make their death defying race to the comparative safety
of the sea.

REDEMPTION PIECE 2005 |

Perfect Ten
$175.00
Dimensions: 4.8"
h x 4" w

"Perfect 10” was
carved to commemorate the ten year anniversary
of the Royal Watch Collector’s Club. Ten
creatures circle the perimeter of this
multi-compartment box figurine, and the top and
middle lids rotate to create 100 different
combinations. Master Carver Peter Calvesbert
says, “Should you grow tired of one set up,
simply choose another! My latest favourite is
the turtle head with zebra body and flamingo
legs.” Peter inscribed all of the ICE expo
cities he visited, but he omitted Edison by
accident – sorry New Jersey! The interior depict
mice. Peter says that during the carving of this
piece, he would be woken at night by the sound
of scurrying feet under the floorboards and
wondered what kept mice awake at night. One
mouse is trying to read but is being driven nuts
by the mouse downstairs playing electric guitar.
The “Lorax” by Dr. Seuss is one of Peter and his
son Sam’s favorite books. The newspaper headline
refers to Peter’s love of baseball and the time
when HK collector Alan Kimenker took him to
Fenway Park to watch his beloved Boston Red Sox
humiliated by the Yankees. 2004 must have been a
happy year for Alan! |
