| ROYAL WATCH MEMBERSHIP KIT 2008 |
$70.00

|
Harmony Kingdom’s collector society, The Royal Watch,
has been in existence for an amazing thirteen years!
Reason for celebration – yes! Yet for the superstitious
amongst us, thirteen is an unlucky number. These mixed
emotions make our 2008/09 club theme of global warming
especially apropos. Our planet is perilously unlucky,
unless we honor her and take action!
Thanks to the tireless and courageous work of Al Gore
(who can be found amidst our new Pot Belly Historical
Collection), global warming is at least on our minds. $5
from each Royal Watch membership will be donated to the
foundation that Gore helped to establish – The Alliance
for Climate Protection.
The new club year begins April 1, 2008 and continues
through March 31, 2009. The membership kit includes the
Small Treasure Jest “Bathing Beauties”, depicting sea
lions, one of the first species impacted by global
warming. The kit also includes a badge with penguins,
another species affected by climate change. In addition,
members may purchase the club exclusive redemption
“Polar Melt”, featuring three sweltering polar bears.
Membership includes two issues of “The Queen’s Courier”
newsletter as well as regular e-mail updates from

Bathing Beauties

“Bathing Beauties” was meant to be a Steller’s sea lion
(Eumetopias Jubatus), but after it was carved, Peter
noticed that some of the pictures he had used as
reference were of the Californian sea lion (Zalophus
Californianus). So he has created a hybrid! During his
research, Peter also learned the difference between
seals and sea lions. Sea lions have ear tufts and can
bend their rear flippers forward, making them more agile
on land than seals. “Steller’s” and “Californian” are
inscribed on the lid, and the number “34” refers to the
number of teeth a sea lion has (unless they’ve eaten too
many sweets). Another sea lion appears inside this box
figurine, as does the new 2008 year of production
hallmark.

The 2008/09 Royal Watch Club
Redemption box figurine portrays three polar bears
sweltering under a hot sun. The ice floe they are sat on
has almost melted – global warming at work. One bear is
puzzled about the heat, another is trying to keep cool
with a fan, and the third has gone to the extremes of
unzipping his skin, revealing a pierced nipple. Along
the base is a miniature polar bear and a melting Glacier
Mint. Fox’s Glacier Mints are a confectionery that
formed part of Peter’s childhood. During the early
1980’s, a long-running Glacier Mint advertising campaign
showed a fox and bear arguing over who should sit atop
the mint. On Peter’s model, it is so hot that even the
mint is melting. The interior shows a seal popping up in
the worst possible place. Around the lid are the names
of the first three polar bears born at London Zoo:
Brumas, Pipaluk and Triplet. Brumas was named after her
keepers, Bruce and Sam. Pipaluk is Inuit for “the little
one”, and triplet was named after a crater on the moon.

A
Note from Peter: When I heard the news of Steve
Irwin’s death, I, like millions around the world, was
profoundly shocked and saddened. He was one of the
world’s “good guys”, someone who gave more back to our
planet than he took out. He gave us all hope that many
endangered animals stood a chance while he was around.
Although known as the Crocodile Hunter, it was his film
about “The 10 Deadliest Snakes in the World” that made
me sit up and take notice. Armed with his trademark
khaki shorts and a ridiculously short twig (in my
opinion), he showed us his fascination and admiration
for these misunderstood reptiles. I would have needed a
suit of armour and a 30 foot pole to follow in his
footsteps. His armour, of course, was his deep knowledge
and experience of his subject. I felt the need to pay
tribute to Steve Irwin’s life, and for me, my work is
where I can best express myself. I was concerned that my
humour might not be to everyone’s taste or, worse still,
that my tribute might be seen as cashing in on a tragic
event. I hope that it is taken as it was meant -
recognition of my respect for his achievements. I chose
animals mourning because in some ways their survival
depends on people like Steve Irwin. For the people like
me who wished they knew him, September 4, 2006 was a
dreadful day.
I can’t imagine what it must have been like for those
who did know him.

ROYAL WATCH 2007 REDEMPTION PIECE |

The Green Team - $95.00

Dimensions: 4 x 4 x 3
Master Carver Peter Calvesbert chose the Green Sea
Turtle as subject for the 2007/08 redemption for a few
reasons. From a design viewpoint, the turtle is both box
shaped and graceful, a rare combination in the animal
world. “Seaside Rendezvous” has always been one of his
favorite pieces, so he was interested in exploring the
topic in larger format. Additionally, with “Wildlife
Warriors” being the 07/08 club theme, Peter wanted to
carve a threatened species. Not only are sea turtles
injured by boat propellers and fishermen’s nets, but
they are hunted by humans for their flesh, shells,
leathery skin and fat, and their nests are raided for
their eggs. They suffer habitat loss from human
development of their nesting areas and ocean pollution.
Artificial lighting on nesting beaches confuses
hatchlings, luring them toward roads instead of the sea.
This large redemption box figurine has secrets galore!
“Peregrine 4” is a reference to the falcon and her four
eggs nesting near Peter’s home. The picture of the wind
turbine recognizes the growing popularity of this
alternate energy source in the UK, but unfortunately the
turbines are taking their toll on bats. “Pip” is short
for Pipistrelle, a type of bat being injured and killed
by the turbines. This box also contains the initials LJR
and yes, Peter did carve this on the wrong box! Of
course if Joe and Lynda Ringelstein do have a pet Green
Turtle, then he will be vindicated. The interior shows
baby turtles emerging from the sand before having to
make their death defying race to the comparative safety
of the sea.

St. Francis And The Fish
Dimensions: 2" x 1" x 2" |
Welcome to The Royal Watch Collector’s Club, celebrating
its eleventh anniversary this year. Eleven has always
been a lucky number of mine, so I’m sure 2006 will be a
fruitful year for us all!
The club theme for 2006/07 is “Pax et Bonum”,
which translates to “Peace and Goodness”. For Francis
of Assisi followers, you may recognize this as the
saint’s motto. Some say that I’m carrying on in his
tradition. Surely I’m no Italian mystic and haven’t
renounced worldly possessions. While I don’t wear
“beggar’s clothing”, for those of you that know me, my
wardrobe isn’t the spiffiest. But like St. Francis, I
have an enduring and undying love of animals of all
kinds.
The Mini Treasure Jest contained within the club kit –
“St. Francis and the Fish” – is based upon the
close relationship shared between Francis and his marine
brethren. Whenever St. Francis saw a fish being caught,
he would return it to the water, warning it not to be
caught again! It is said that the fish would often
linger nearby, listening to Francis preach, until he
gave them permission to leave. I have carved quite a few
sea creatures over the years, and I have to say that
they are amongst my favorites.
The club kit pin, “Preaching to the Birds”, is
based on another St. Francis legend, and “Gubbio
Town”, the club exclusive redemption box figurine,
tells the story of a terrifying and ferocious wolf that
Francis led into the town of Gubbio, where a pact
between the startled citizens and the wolf was made.
Because the wolf had done evil out of hunger, the
townsfolk were to feed him regularly, and in return, the
wolf would no longer prey upon them or their flocks.
As with all of my carvings, I’ve infused a bit of
irreverence into the club pieces, so hopefully no
offense will be taken. The magical world in which we
live is pure delight, and with a bit more “peace and
goodness”, the vision of St. Francis where all creatures
live together peaceably will be realized.

Gubbio Town - $69.00

Dimensions: 2 x 2 x 3
|
|
“Gubbio Town”, the club redemption piece, is based on a
St. Francis legend. For a time, the saint lived in
Gubbio, where there was a wolf “terrifying and
ferocious, who devoured men as well as animals.” Francis
went up into the hills to find the wolf, who
miraculously closed his jaws and lay down at the saint’s
feet. “Brother Wolf, you do much harm in these parts and
you have done great evil” said Francis. “All these
people accuse you and curse you…But brother wolf, I
would like to make peace between you and the people.”
Then Francis led the wolf into town and made a pact
between the startled citizens and the wolf. Because the
wolf had “done evil out of hunger” the townsfolk were to
feed the wolf regularly, and in return, the wolf would
no longer prey upon them or their flocks. In this manner
Gubbio was freed from the menace of the predator. |
